The feeder stream, known also by its Japanese appelation, yarimizu, was designed to carry water into Oizumi ga Ike. It is located to the northeast of the pond. Its design is based on the geomantic principles explained in the classic garden manualSakuteiki (“Treatise on Garden Making”). The meandering flow is punctuated by rocks carefully placed to simulate the natural barriers, falls, and obstacles of a mountain stream. Motsuji’s feeder stream is extremely valuable, as it is the only one remaining from the Heian era (794-1192). It is also the stage for the annual spring event, Gokusui no En (above), a colorful and elegant recreation of court recreation.
